Your business online: a practical launch checklist

A clear starting point for Tanzanian businesses: choose a domain, prepare a useful website, set up professional email and give customers an easy way to reach you.

A useful business website begins with a simple question: what should a customer be able to do after visiting? They might need to request a quote, find your location or ask about a service. Build your first website around that action.

Choose a domain you can say aloud

Keep your domain short, recognisable and close to your business name. Before committing, check its availability and confirm both the initial registration cost and the renewal cost. Keep the registration details and recovery email under your business’s control.

Prepare the essentials before design begins

Write a short introduction to your business, a clear description of each service and your contact details. Gather your logo and photographs you have permission to use. A focused home page, services page and contact page can give a small business a useful starting point.

Make contact easy on a phone

Use readable text and clear buttons. Check that customers can call, send a WhatsApp message or complete a contact form without zooming or searching through several pages. Submit a test enquiry and confirm that it reaches the person who will respond.

Use email that matches your domain

An address such as hello@yourbusiness.co.tz keeps customer conversations connected to your business name. Decide who will monitor it, set a strong password and enable additional sign-in protection where your mail provider supports it. Test sending and receiving before sharing the address publicly.

Help customers understand and find you

Give each page a descriptive title and explain your services in words customers would use. Keep your business name, contact details and opening hours consistent wherever you publish them. If your business qualifies for a Google Business Profile, prepare accurate information and complete Google’s verification process. Search visibility takes ongoing work; a new website is a starting point.

Plan for the second year

Keep a record of domain, hosting and maintenance renewals. Agree who will update the website, maintain backups and respond if something breaks. Review the site whenever your prices, services or contact details change.
